Becoming an entrepreneur and launching yourself into the world of business ownership is no easy undertaking.

After all, you’ll need to oversee employees, deal with clients and contractors, and ensure that your business finances remain afloat while everything else is going on around you.

Plus, before you even launch your business, there are hundreds of decisions that you’ll need to make, and many of them can leave you feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and at your wit’s end.

Coming up with a memorable business is often one of these decisions that can be hard to resolve.

In the following article, we’re exploring a few simple tips to help you choose the best and most memorable name for your new business.

Let’s go!

Pick Something Universal

While there is a lot of drilling down and thinking that should go into choosing a name for your business, you want to come up with something universal.

In other words, you want to find something that you like, that your target audience will like, that will look good on your business cards and website branding, and that won’t get old as time goes by.

Unfortunately, landing on a name that checks off all these criteria is easier said than done.

But by using the following tips, you should be able to choose a business name that will be fun, memorable, and descriptive of your business as well.

Describe Your Products Or Services

Of course, you don’t want to be overly plain and straightforward with your business name. But it’s never a bad idea to land on a business name that will be descriptive of your products or services.

For instance, suppose you own an online business that sells sneakers. In that case, you might come up with something descriptive of that product, such as “Shoes-R-Us” or “Everything Shoes.”

These are only examples, and they may very well already be taken by other businesses. But the idea is to keep it simple.

Using a name that describes your products or services is also a great way to inform your audience what it is that you do, even if they’ve only just heard your business name for the first time.

For instance, if I told you that I owned a small business called Shoes-R-Us, you would automatically know that I sell footwear, and likely all kinds of it.

Use A Play On Words

If you want your business name to be memorable, you should also try to put a more creative take on it.

In the example above, the name Shoes-R-Us is a play on the name of the famous toy store called Toys-R-Us.

Using a similar approach, we could play with the name of a shoe company and come up with a range of different potential business names using popular phrases, idioms, or turns of phrase.

For example, you might choose to call your business something like:

  • Shoe-Zilla
  • Shoe-Opolis
  • Shoe Town

All of which are simply more creative and fun than something plain like “The Shoe Store.”

Avoid Being A Copycat

Although a shoe store called “Shoes-R-Us” is cute and easy to remember, it’s essential never to copy or rip off any of your competitors.

From your audience’s perspective, this doesn’t look good simply because it looks like you didn’t even take the time to come up with your business name.

And secondly, you might even end up getting your business into serious legal trouble over copyright usage or royalties, which is something that you’ll probably want to avoid while running a business.

In the end, what you choose to name your business is entirely up to you.

But if you’re having trouble brainstorming any good ideas, using these tips should help you get started.

Don’t be scared to try a few different ideas, ask your friends and family what they think, and then land on a business name that you’re sure to be proud of today and for all the years to come.
